Cara kerja dari mesin bubut ini yaitu, benda kerja yang akan dibubut dipegang dan ditempatkan pada poros spindle dengan bantuan chuck. Pergunakan chuck yang memiliki rahang di salah satu ujungnya pada pusat sumbu putarannya. Sementara itu pada ujung lainnya dapat ditumpu juga dengan center yang lain. Gerakan rotasi pada benda kerja tersebut yang akan menghasilkan gerakan potong, sementara pahat yang telah dibawa pada deretan translali sejajar dengan sumbu spindle tersebut akan menghasilkan gerakan bubut tersebut.
Mesin bubut sendiri dirancang untuk membentuk benda kerja memiliki bentukan dasar yang silindrik, misal saja untuk pembuatan poros silindrik, lubang silindrik, poros kerucut silindrik dan membuat uliran. Selain membentuk benda – benda silindrik saja, mesin bubut ini juga digunakan untuk meratakan suatu benda kerja dan melakukan proses knurling. Berikut ini merupakan proses kerja dari mesin bubut, yang pertama adalah gerakan potong ini dilakukan saat benda kerja melakukan gerak rotasi. Sedangkan gerak makan dilakukan saat benda kerja melakukan gerak translasi. Input dari proses mesin bubut ini yaitu yang menjadi penggerak dalam kerja mesin bubut adalah motor listrik.
Daya tersebut menjadi transmisi kerja yang diteruskan pada transmisi I dan transmisi II. Daya tadi yang diteruskan pada transmisi I akan menggerakkan spindle pada mesin sehingga akan mencekam benda kerja tersebut. Sedangkan daya yang diteruskan pada transmisi II akan diubah menjadi gerakan translasi oleh poros pembawa. Output dari proses kerja mesin bubut ini sendiri menghasilkan benda kerja hasil proses pembubutan yang telah dibentuk sesuai dengan keinginan.
